Discovery Path
retreat ... relax ... reflect ... renew ... re-enter
Do you need to step away from your day to day world in order to make important career and life decisions? Discovery Path provides you with a personal and career development opportunity to leave the business of ordinary life behind and re-evaluate your life, prioritize your options, and then act on your plan.
What past participants have said:
- "I gave myself permission to look at who I am and what I want”
- "I realize I need to get a life"
- "I appreciated the positive, holistic approach to the Program and how I need to mirror that in my day-to-day life"
- "The time spent listening to myself and others as we shared our stories was so special"
- "I took the time to be by myself and enjoy it"
- "I realized that I do have choices"
- "I had a sense of feeling being taken care of for the first time, not only by Mary but by the other participants, and that felt good"
- "Just knowing there is follow-up coaching for when I go back to my real world encouraged me put some action plans on paper"
- "The Program allowed me the time to put into perspective what is important in life”
Discovery Path is offered to both organizations and individuals. For organizations we can customize the program to meet your specific needs. For individuals the program is offered twice a year, in the fall and in the spring.
The program is always limited to 10 people to ensure that every participant has the opportunity to speak and to be heard.

Discovery Path consists of three parts:
Part One: Pre-Workshop
You will receive pre-workshop self-assessment materials for completion prior to the workshop and Mary Wheeler will contact you to discuss your goals and expectations of the program.
Part Two: The Workshop
A metaphor of wandering and discovering is used throughout the workshop. This theme is reflected in both the workshop’s design and its peaceful, rural setting offering solitude and simplicity.
Mary will use a variety of interactive, experiential and participative approaches as you embark on each of the three workshop components:
- Self-Discovery -- Where have I been? Where am I now?
- Vision Crafting -- Where would I like to go? What self-limiting beliefs or roadblocks have the potential to inhibit my journey?
- Grounding the Vision -- How will I get there?
You will be encouraged to use journal writing to document your personal discoveries throughout the workshop. A "compass" (your participant package) includes a number of questions introduced at the beginning of each component that you can refer to when you feel lost or need direction. Generous allowances are given between each component so that you to have time to wander in the countryside and consider the questions raised. At the end of each component everyone gathers to share their personal discoveries and learnings.
By the end of the workshop, you will have developed an action plan to realize your vision of where you want to go in the next stage of your life and career.
Part Three: Follow-up
How will you know you have reached your destination? Your return to community can be either smooth or rocky. Joseph Campbell put it well: “It’s easy enough to go off on a quest but to return—well that’s another story. What has been gained can still be lost at this point.” The career vision you have articulated for yourself may take you in a completely new direction from where you were when you began this process. The program provides you with individual and group coaching support and feedback as you re-enter your day to day world and begin to implement your plan.
Your guide for Discovery Path is Mary M. Wheeler a certified coach with over 15 years of expertise in career, organization and human resource development and who has published extensively in the area of career development, coaching and mentoring.
